MSR EXO™2 Titanium Cooking Pot

Trail Testers Recommended 100%

SRP £70  (Plates and Mugs Extra)

MSR describe the EXO™2 Titanium Cooking Pot as suitable for snow melting or boiling water quickly. The pot arrived in time for our Mountain Ski Touring week in Norway, so although the pot seemed huge compared with my Titan Kettle,  I packed it with the rest of my gear and I was pleased that I did.

This lightweight titanium cooking pot for two, weighs in at a very respectable 260g.

It has a removable folding handle which holds the lid securely when the pot is stowed in your pack.

Extend the handle by pressing the red button and the handle locks tightly in place. During tests it never accidentally unlocked which makes it a very good feature.

The lid is drilled to serve as colander, though I never tried this as I only used the pot for snow melting.

The handle on the lid is fixed and cool to the touch, unlike other MSR pots such as the Titan Kettle, where burnt fingers are the norm.

You can also buy deep plastic plates and insulated mugs as an extra, which nest neatly inside the pot.

In Norway, I used the pot with a Primus Omni stove burning liquid fuel and gas, I have also used it with the Primus Eta Packlite.

The pot is quite big and I managed to fit in my Titan mug, small gas cylinder, dried food, packet soups, coffee and tea bags, which gave me all I needed for a day and a night out on the snow.

I was using the Haglofs ROC25 as my day sack for both skiing and snowshoeing and the pot fitted neatly right way up inside the pack. I also carried a Thermos Flask as a hydration pack, as temperatures were in the -20 to - 40 range and everything else just froze solid!

When I stopped for a brew, I would fill the EXO™2 with snow and set it up on the stove. It was very stable even when I had it full. It took about five minutes to melt and that gave me about one pint of water, enough for a hot drink, refilling my flask or hydrating my pack of dried food.

I got into the routine of melting the first batch of snow for a hot drink and topping up my flask. Then I would melt a second pan of snow for my dehydrated ration pack.

The stove used little gas for this and at the end of the week I still had gas to spare.

On another trip in the UK, I used the pot to heat my Wayfarer boil in the bag meals and this worked very well too.

Snow melting takes time, fuel and you need a lot of snow for a cup of tea. The 2.4L capacity of the pot happily coped with this and as described above it worked very well. Being a good size meant that I was also able to use it as my larder so it saved me room in my pack and kept everything in one place.

MSR say the EXO™2 is good for Alpine ascents, or long distance travel for two persons and from my own experiences

using it solo in Norway and in Wales, I would agree with them and am quite happy to recommend this excellent pot.
