You know the feeling when you are packing your sack and heading for the great outdoors and you can’t quite squeeze everything in. Well no matter how much gear you have got in your pack, don’t forget to pack The Kitchen Sink!

Really I’m not kidding, this innovative piece of kit from those clever guys at Sea to Summit is just so cool, I don’t know why someone didn’t think of it before.

The Kitchen Sink is a pop up washing up bowl.

It comes stored in its own zip open pouch which weighs little and takes up about the same space as a bread roll.

Just unzip the pouch, take out the folded up sink and hey presto it snaps into shape ready for work. There is a stainless steel stiffening ring around the neck so it won’t collapse.

When I was in Norway I used the sink every day and found it very useful in the ski lodge, for washing my smalls, as it will handle hot water as well as cold and detergent is not a problem. Hotel sinks are notorious for having plugs that leak and mine was no exception. I would fill it up, put in my socks, knickers etc and leave them to soak and come back an hour later and they were just a wet heap at the bottom of a dry wash basin. Put them in the bath I hear you say, well tricky with just a shower. The answer was to use the Kitchen Sink. It would sit nicely inside the wash basin and thanks to its taped seams never leaked a drop.

In camp, it is even more useful and I really like the design.

If your cooking goes beyond boiling water for dehydrated meals, then having somewhere to soak burnt on food etc, is really helpful.

When it is bucketing down with rain or the midges are biting, standing over a stream filtering drinking water can be a pain. So just fill the kitchen sink at one go and carry it back to your tent with the two strong webbing handles. You can put it down inside the fly without worry that it will tip over, as the base is bigger than the top. Then out of the weather or beyond the reach of the biting nasties, filter at leisure.

The sink is also really great for soaking tired feet in hot salty water or taking a flannel bath. Wipes are okay when you are going ultra lightweight, but the luxury of a wet soapy flannel on a hot day, to wipe away sweat at the end of a long hike, is pure bliss. The bowl is big enough to wring out your flannel and wash away that sticky feeling.

The Kitchen Sink comes in three sizes, 5L  for solo use,  10L for two and a huge 20L which will cope with the needs of a group.

Sea to Summit say that the 5L  kitchen sink also makes a handy dog bowl.

So I gave this a go when I last took Jess, my border collie, with me for a couple of days of wild camping. I duly filled the kitchen sink with clean water from a brook and laid it down for her to drink. She looked at it and then at me and when it came time to drink, found a muddy puddle, which by her standards, obviously was preferable. It’s all a matter of taste I guess!

In conclusion, The Kitchen Sink is an absolute winner and we give it our 100% rating      -      Dawn Smith - Ed
