AKU Trekker Lite GTX 3 Season Boot Review

In conclusion I can well recommend the AKU Trekker Lite GTX as an all round boot. It is very comfortable out of the box, the waterproof membrane works well without turning the boots into an oven thanks to the brilliant lining, so they are comfortable to wear in a variety of conditions. If you forget to clean them when you get home they won’t complain, but when you do, they clean up nicely and you can pop down the shops. Magic!

I have had the Trekker Lite GTX, lightweight walking boots from AKU on long term test and can say hand on heart that they are one of the most comfortable boots that I have ever worn.

I have walked out in them every day for the last five months across a variety of terrain, from country lanes, to boggy paths, to challenging scree, to slippery mountain trails and they have never let me down.

I find that some boots require several days, or weeks, careful breaking in, to prevent blisters, but these AKU Trekker Lite GTX were good to go straight out of the box.

As I broke a number of bones in my right foot a while ago, I usually wear special support insoles and transfer these from one pair of boots to the other.

I had been wearing the AKU’s for a week, which included some enthusiastic scrambling when I got a stone in my boot. Taking them off to clear the offending object, I saw with amazement that I had been wearing them without my special insoles. I had been in a rush the day the boots arrived and had obviously  forgotten to swop over the insoles. The boots had been so comfortable, that I hadn’t noticed my error.

Suffice to say, that I have continued wearing the boots with the standard AKU insole and have never had any comfort issues during this long test.

The boots have very sensible laces that allows the tongue to be really opened up, making it easy to put the boots on and take them off when wearing thick socks.

I have worn the boots with and without gaiters and fitting gaiters over these boots is no problem at all.

The boots have a very comfortable padded fabric lining which helps to keep your feet fresh and the Gore-Tex®  membrane has kept my feet dry over the several months of testing.

When I test a pair of boots I try and give them as hard a life as possible, so that readers will know how they really shape up.

Where some might only wear their boots at weekends, or for occasional week long tramps in the hills, boots on test at Trail Testers get a really  hard life over a period of just a few months.

They are worn every day come rain or shine and are put away wet and muddy and not cleaned as they should be. They are never dried by a heat source, such as an open fire or radiator, but allowed to dry off in just the warmth of the kitchen.

Once they have been broken in, they are worn for walking in as many varied conditions as we can find and at the end of the day a report sheet is filled in, making notes of positive and negative points.

Boots are used for general wear too which includes a trip out in the car to see how they measure up.

Then we do clean them and see how easily they can be spruced up.
